Twitter blocked the Chinese Embassy account in the US
Twitter blocked the Chinese Embassy in the US for posting articles defending Beijing's policies with Xinjiang Uighurs.
Twitter account @ChineseEmbinUS of the Chinese Embassy in the US earlier this month published a study by China Daily, saying that Uighur women have been liberated and are no longer "birth machines".
This post was later labeled a warning by Twitter and is no longer available.
"We have taken action against accounts that violate our policy against dehumanization, which states: We prohibit the dehumanization of a group of people based on religion.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington, which joined Twitter in June 2019, has not yet commented.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing today, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hoa Xuan Oanh said they were confused by Twitter's move.
Twitter's move comes a day after the administration of former President Donald Trump accused China of committing "genocide" in Xinjiang and the new Biden administration confirmed it.
Twitter is blocked in China, but well-received by state media and diplomats.
This isn't the first time Twitter has acted against China-related accounts.
China has repeatedly denied US accusations of the Xinjiang Uighurs, asserting policies in Xinjiang are in line with the law to counter terrorist threats, extremism and human protection.
